Properties of the Stone
Quarry Location, Geological Origin, and Nomenclature
Aleppo Breccia, quarried in the Aix region of France starting in the 18th century, is classified as ‘Brecciated Limestone.’ This stone features large, rounded fragments in vibrant shades of brown, gray, red, or black set against a yellow base. Although Italian stonemasons referred to this stone as ‘Breche d’Alep’ (Aleppo Breccia), it was entirely quarried in France. A similar stone was also quarried on the Greek island of Chios.
Historical References and Architectural Application Areas
Aleppo Breccia has been utilized in architectural decoration, including columns, column capitals, wall cladding, and other details, as well as furniture and fireplaces. Notable examples include a Louis XV chest of drawers in Chinese lacquer and a shelf, both conserved in the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. Additionally, in Istanbul, Aleppo Breccia was used as tile-shaped cladding on the exterior walls of the Revan Pavilion in Topkapı Palace.
