Quarry Site

Akhisar Alabaster, also known as Thyatira Alabaster, has been quarried since ancient times in the village of Harmandalı in Akhisar, Manisa. The name ‘Thyatira’ refers to the ancient city from which the stone originates. 

Technical Specifications

Scientifically classified as ‘Alabaster’ and commonly categorized as onyx, it is renowned for its distinctive yellow coloration. It features a compact structure with alternating thick bands of pure honey-colored calcite and thin layers of milky white, calcite crystals.

Historical Use and Cultural Significance

During the Roman Empire, Akhisar Alabaster was used in several notable buildings. At Ephesus, it adorned the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, and the Basilica of Saint John. In Istanbul, it was featured on the Imperial Gate of Hagia Sophia.
