Quarry Site and Nomenclature

Tiberianum Granite was first quarried during the 1st century from the Wadi Barud region of Egypt’s Eastern Desert. It is a magmatic rock of the ‘Quartz Diorite’ type.

During the Roman Empire, this stone was known as ‘Marmor Tiberianum’ due to the nearby Tiberiane Fort, and Italian stonemasons referred to it as ‘Granito Bianco e Nero,’ because of its color.

It was highly prized for its specked black and white appearance and durability.

Tiberianum Granite was used in columns in the Sultan’s Lodge (Hünkâr Mahfili) of Bayezid Mosque.
